Facts and Useful Information

Also called the eyelash leaf-tailed gecko or the fantastic leaf-tailed gecko, the satanic leaf-tailed gecko’s generic name comes from the Latin words meaning “tail” and “flat”, and their specific name comes from the word “imaginary” since it has such a unique appearance. The size of this gecko is about 10-12 inches long, and it can live for up to 10 years. The satanic leaf-tailed gecko does not require a specific diet for its livelihood, as long as it has some land snails, worms, and most especially insects, it becomes as healthy as it can be. When choosing a safe place for it to live in, you should consider getting a cage not smaller than 18 inches long,28 inches wide, and 36 inches tall because they love to call it all their way. Also, the temperature level required for the satanic leaf-tailed gecko environment should be about 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and a humidity of between 70-85%. During the day, these geckos use a variety of tactics to stay safe from predators like eagles, snakes, and rats. Besides camouflage, they can also flatten their bodies to minimize their shadow, open their jaws wide to show their bright red mouths, or shed their tail and run away.

Tank Setup

When it concerns the habitat of the Satanic leaf-tailed geckos, the specie requires adequate vertical space for climbing, and a suitable home such as tanks made of glass or clear plastic and equipped with a screen or ventilated cover will be the best choice. This gecko’s tank should be ten inches wide, ten inches deep, and twenty inches high. At the bottom of the tank, you should place peat moss or sphagnum moss to provide ideal substrates since the tank glass will be trapping water droplets on its skin which will act as a means to keep the satanic leaf-tailed gecko to stay hydrated. More so, since this gecko species originates in the rainforests of Madagascar, it is, therefore, prone to spend the majority of its time hiding. Providing lots of vegetation for the tank will make your gecko enjoy its suitable habitat. So while searching for a tank for your Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko, requires you to get a tall cage, so trying to use a traditional fish tank aquarium won’t work, which is why most experts recommend a minimum cage size of 10” W x 10” D x 20” H, though bigger is always better. Also, you need to make sure to check in their tank every couple of days and remove any food that has been in too long to avoid them getting sick, and if you put live crickets in the enclosure every couple of days, it will be the greatest move ever in helping your gecko feed.

And the  Satanic leaf-tailed gecko only grows to 3.5 inches long, including its tail, and weighs less than an ounce. Moreover, like most geckos, it has huge eyes, which enable it for nighttime vision, and its feet have bud-shaped toes filled with setae, which allows it to cling to surfaces as smooth as glass. The body coloring of the Satanic leaf-tailed gecko ranges from a variety of colors, such as orange to tan to brown, and this little gecko has the ability to blend in perfectly with leaf litter. If you take a good look at the appearance and body of the satanic leaf-tailed gecko, you will notice it has some markings on the skin that look like leaf veins, it also has a curved body that mimics the edge of a leaf, and it tail is the perfect imitation of a dead leaf. The Satanic leaf-tailed gecko has a back that is arched like the curve of a leaf, and its tail is also foliform, with spots and irregularities found on a decaying leaf. On a close look, you will realize that the males appear to have more notches on their tails than females, while the body of the gecko also bears the colors of a dead or dying leaf, and it has sharp ridges over its eyes that give it a scary and frightening look.

Breeding Satanic Leaf Tailed Geckos

When it comes to breeding a satanic leaf-tailed gecko, you might not find it easy or fascinating like taking care of a normal reptile breed such as a common lizard, and if you want to consider caring for or breeding a satanic leaf-tailed gecko, then you will need a slightly larger enclosure than necessary because this baby loves having the house all to itself. You will have to consider getting a tank about 12 inches wide, 16 inches deep, and 20 inches high, and this will sound just fine in breeding and housing a male and a female together. It is also best to lay down some leaf litter on top of the moss substrate at the bottom of the tank because females are likely known to deposit their eggs underneath the fallen leaves of the rainforest floor. This amazing gecko is, however, known for its egg-laying aspect and also as an animal that typically lays clutches of two eggs on the ground under the cover of leaves for a period of time so that the egg can incubate for about 60 to 70 days under those leaves before they are being hatched.
